cXm Professionals Association Certification Commission Expands Professional Certification Program for the Modern Customer Communications Profession
Expanded program recognizes professional expertise across Documents, Customer Communications, and Communications Experiences
ATLANTA, GA — September 24, 2026 — The cXm Professionals Association (CXMPA) Certification Commission today announced the expansion of its Professional Certification Program to recognize expertise across three complementary disciplines in the modern customer communications profession: Documents, Customer Communications, and Communications Experiences.
The expanded program builds on the established Electronic Document Professional (EDP) certification and introduces two additional professional certifications: Customer Communications Management Professional (CCMP) and Communications Experience Management Professional (CXMP).
Together, EDP, CCMP, and CXMP recognize that professional responsibilities have evolved and expanded as organizations move from managing documents to managing customer communications across print, digital, and emerging channels, and increasingly to managing the connected experiences those communications create.
The certifications represent complementary professional disciplines, not successive levels. Professionals may pursue one, two, or all three certifications based on their knowledge, experience, responsibilities, and career focus.
“Career paths in this industry are rarely confined to one discipline. Someone may begin in production, document composition, technology, or operations and move into communications management, digital delivery, experience design, journey management, or other areas of the customer communications ecosystem. Our goal is to provide a professional development framework that can grow with them while recognizing the expertise they build along the way.”
— Scott Mulkey, President & CEO, CXMPA
Three Professional Certifications
The Electronic Document Professional (EDP) certification recognizes professionals with broad knowledge and practical expertise across the document ecosystem. The certification covers the Communications Systems Development Lifecycle and the document production workflow, including document systems, composition, production, output management, print and digital delivery, archiving, and postal optimization.
The Customer Communications Management Professional (CCMP) certification recognizes professionals who manage customer communications across print, digital, and emerging channels. The certification covers communication strategy, content, governance, personalization, delivery, compliance, workflow, operations, and optimization across transactional, regulatory, marketing, sales, and service communications.
The Communications Experience Management Professional (CXMP) certification recognizes professionals responsible for designing, governing, delivering, measuring, and continuously improving communications experiences. The certification covers experience design, journey and interaction orchestration, personalization and decisioning, preference management, accessibility, customer feedback, analytics, and continuous optimization.
All three certifications are vendor-neutral and share a common professional competency framework centered on the Communications Systems Development Lifecycle and Workflow Journey Components. The expanded CXMPA Skills Matrix provides a common structure for professionals to demonstrate depth and breadth, while allowing certification evaluations to focus on the responsibilities, professional judgment, contributions, and outcomes relevant to each discipline.
CXMPA will introduce the expanded Professional Certification Program to students and industry professionals on September 24 during Building the Future Workforce: Career Paths in Print, Mail & Customer Communications, part of the association’s educational programming at PRINTING United Expo in Las Vegas.
